INTERIM GRADE 1
10/10/13
Assessor feedback

Matt, for task 1 part 1 you discuss some employment opportunities and functions in the Performing Arts.  You refer to some jobs and explain their roles well. You also explain how some of the jobs are linked to others.

The production manager is linked with the following job roles in the theatre, Set Design, Props, Costume Design, Performance Departments, Stage Crew, Lighting and Sound, Extra casual staff, Directors and all the production heads of departments.
The Production Manager has a schedule which allows sufficient time for 'making' departments such as wardrobe, paintshops, workshops and props. They have arrangements to make in the performance departments with set designers and the lighting & sound on the necessary preparations for providing people and equipment for the shows. The Production Manager may have to employ extra casual staff if it's s large production such as a pantomime or a musical.
The Production Manager has a link with The Finance and Administration Department as the Production manager has to stay on top of the budget, not allowing people e.g the set designer, to pay out money left right and centre for things they need. They need to make sure the budget is being maintained.

For task 1 part 2 you create a database for a theatre company

New Pace Theatre

You describe it in some detail

Task 1 part 1 is promising– some jobs well-described and how they link to others.
Develop this to M1 by expanding the range of roles you describe in detail and how they link.
Task 2 part 2 you create a name for a theatre company, you describe it.
Develop it into P3 by creating a database for it with a list of services. For M3 say clearly for each WHY they are most suitable for the needs of your own particular company.
BTEC MUSICAL THEATRE

PERFORMING ARTS BUSINESS

TASK 1 WEEKS 1-4.
Your first task has two parts and is handed in on 10.10.13 for your first interim grade.

PART 1 weeks 1 and 2 (P1,M1,D1)

The performing arts play an important part in most people’s lives…..

On your table BRAINSTORM the many ways the performing arts figure in people’s lives. Report your findings to the class.

How does a large company such as the National Theatre operate?
How MANY people in what types of job are behind the curtain going up on opening night?

Extra question - How could an employee PROGRESS from one job to another?

TASK 1 first part (P1,M1,D1):
Research and collate information about a range of jobs in the arts from a range of named sources such as papers like “The Stage” and a range of websites such as the National Theatre one shown above.

For a pass - you’ll just deal with a few jobs investigated from only one website or journal, with short descriptions of each one in your own words.
For a merit – you’ll deal with a lot of jobs, giving clear descriptions and showing understanding of what each of them involves, the demands and responsibilities of each one.
For a distinction – you’ll cover a really wide range of jobs with clear descriptions etc as for a merit, and you’ll also be able to comment on the way many of the jobs are linked. You would also be able to suggest how someone could progress from one job to another ….eg a STAGE MANAGER would have had experience as an ASM….

EVIDENCE can include your personal findings clearly labelled “Performing Arts Business task 1,Part 1” on your blog with sources and bibliography. You can also rehearse and present verbal solo or group illustrated presentations which can be recorded.

These websites might be helpful….
and some actual job descriptions to start you off!

Job descriptions and case studies
TASK 1 second part (P3,M3,D3)
Create a useful database for your own small local theatre company.
Detail a variety of services that are relevant, such as casting agencies, Equity, BECTU and maybe the Musicians Union.
Include details of hire services such as lighting, sound, props and scenic equipment

To achieve a pass – P3 you’ll supply a small list of services giving contact details and limited descriptions of the type of services it provides.
To achieve a merit – M3 you would provide a complete list of services giving clear explanations as to WHY they appear on the database for your company.
To achieve a distinction – D3 you would do all of the above but also CRITICALLY COMMENT on how each service can interrelate – e.g. your actors would require the services of Equity.

Here are some useful websites:

Learner’s comment and action plan (3 targets)

I need to list more job roles in the theatre business/industry in task 1, so my target for this task and other tasks is to go into more detail and research more information to put into my blog entries.
On my theatre company entry I need to add more detail about who would come and work at my theatre and why, again I need to do more research into job roles.
I need to take more time researching the information that needs to go into my blog and make my entries more detailed.
